International Baccalaureate

WIS will apply to become a candidate school* for the Primary and Middle Years Programmes. We are pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that WIS believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) as IB World Schools can offer any of its three academic programmes: the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), or the IB Diploma Programme. Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org.

What is IB?

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP) form a coherent sequence of learning that will greatly benefit WIS children. Each program promotes the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth, through all domains of knowledge, and involves the major traditions of learning in language arts, social studies, science, mathematics, foreign language, physical education and the arts (music, art, drama).

The PYP is designed for grades preK through 5th. As a trans-disciplinary program of international education, the PYP fosters the development of the whole child. It draws on research and best practices from a range of national systems and international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children. It integrates concepts, knowledge, skills, attitude and action across disciplines.

The MYP is designed for grades 6th through 8th. This period is a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development and requires a program that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts.

Curiosity and a spirit of discovery are stimulated through a broad and creative approach to inquiry and learning. The IBO models encourage learners to collaborate and work in groups, yet the flexibility of the programs provide opportunity for students to stand out. The main goal of PYP and MYP is for each child to achieve his or her own personal best preparing them for tomorrow.

The IB philosophy proposes that education can foster understanding among young people around the world, enabling future generations to live more peacefully and productively than before. By emphasizing the dynamic combination of knowledge, skills, independent thought and international awareness or intercultural understanding, the IBO espouses the principles of educating the whole person for a life of active, responsible citizenship.
