Due to the small class sizes at WIS, the music curriculum will be designed in a flexible format to best serve the needs and skill levels of the children in each class. Topics will be covered in an interdisciplinary perspective, using the International Baccalaureate guidelines and highlighting the ways in which music is linked to art, history, literature, geography, and culture. Below is a general guideline of topics to be covered.
Junior Kindergarten & Kindergarten
• Understand the role of a conductor
• Understand basic rhythmic notation
• Clap and use percussion instruments in unison
• Sing a variety of folk songs
• Experience the orchestral instruments & families
• Music concepts: Pitch, Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Dynamics, Tempo
• Explore the four eras of music history, including composers and works from each era.
Elementary Grades
• Perform in multi-part percussion ensemble
• Read treble and bass staff notation
• Sing in unison, rounds, and harmony
• Identify instruments by sound
• Perform rhythmic dictation
• Create melodic and harmonic compositions
• Music concepts: Articulation, Form, Style, Meter, Timbre
• Theory concepts: Keys, Scales, Intervals, Triads, Primary triads
• Explore western music genres: opera, symphony, sonata, concerto, etc.
• Explore American musical history
• Explore elements of non-Western musical traditions
• Research a composer
Middle Grades
• Perform melodic dictation
• Create ensemble compositions
• Perform basic conducting patterns
• Music concepts: Instrumentation, Ornamentation, Improvisation
• Theory concepts: Cadences, V7 chords, Secondary triads
• Explore elements of contemporary art music
• Explore jazz and modal tonalities
• Research socio-cultural influences on Western music development
