FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ADMISSIONS and ENROLLMENT

What is the total enrollment?
There are approximately 130 students in our Toddler through Grade 7 classes. Students come from all over Brown and Door counties. We will open Grade 8 of our Middle School next fall: September 2010.

How old does my child need to be to enter Kindergarten?
Your child should be 5 years old by September 1.

How old does my child need to be to enter 4K, 3K or the Toddler program?
A child enrolling in our 4K program should be 4 by September 1. A child enrolling on our 3K program should be 3 by September 1. Toddlers should be 18 months by September 1 to be considered for our Toddler program.

Is there foreign language instruction?
All WIS students in our 3K program through middle school receive foreign language every day. Students can choose between Mandarin and Spanish instruction. More information can be found here.

We are pleased to tell you that a native speaking WIS parent has volunteered to instruct the toddler class three times/week in Spanish language.

Where do WIS students go for high school?
Our families value education and look for the best match for their preschool, elementary and middle school-aged children. We anticipate parents will do the same level of research when their children are ready to begin high school. We are not aligned with any local high schools.

How can I get an application and more information?
Applications and other pertinent documents can be found be clicking here. After you have completed the application, mail it with a check to WIS  405 Grant St.  De Pere, WI 54115 or drop it off in the school office.

How can I schedule a tour and what can we expect?
Tours of the school are strongly encouraged. More information can be found here. Please call the school at (920) 632-7368 to speak to Head of School Stanley Way or email Mr. Way to arrange your tour.

Are there other alternatives to seeing the school?
In the first quarter of the new year, we generally hold evening open houses to show prospective families our school. Teachers, older students and parents are on hand as well.

For a more intimate setting, you can join Head of School Stanley Way for Coffee & Croissants in the early morning of a school day for questions followed by spending time in the classroom.

Neither event requires reservations. More details about both these events can be found by clicking here.

Where is the office located and where should we park?
The school office is located just inside the front entrance at 405 Grant Street in West        De Pere. On-street parking should be readily available along Grant and 4th Streets.

What is the deadline for enrolling?
WIS accepts students on a rolling admissions basis. We currently do not have an enrollment deadline.

What standardized testing is required?
For prospective students looking at entering Elementary and Middle School grade levels, they will be asked to complete reading, mathematics and writing assessments with Mr. Way as part of their classroom visit.

Prospective preschool students will spend some quality one on one time with the preschool teacher as part of their classroom visit. The teacher will assess the child's social, emotional and pre-language and pre-math skills in a very natural and fun setting.

How many students are in each grade?
WIS is pleased to offer a small classroom setting for our students enabling individualized learning. Generally, our target class size is 12 children in 3K, 14 children in 4K and 16 children in Kindergarten and up.

What kinds of student is WIS looking for?
All kinds as there is no typical WIS student! Children that are a good fit are motivated, intellectually curious and with average and above-average academic interests. We also look for children that are willing to try new things and who enjoy collaborating with others. Lastly, children who come from diverse family backgrounds and cultures and who will become good friends and leaders.

Additionally, at the preschool level, we look for children that exhibit behavioral independence (i.e. toilet-trained), who can follow simple directions and show interest in playing and working with others.

How are applicants evaluated?
We look at the whole student, not simply the test scores and grades. We are interested in what current teachers say about a student's academic potential, motivation and strengths. We are also interested in what the student's interests and goals may be. Finally, after the classroom visit, the Head of School reviews the student's day with the classroom teachers.

I'm a home-schooled student. What should I submit in lieu of the school and teacher's reports?
We would want to see any samples of textbooks, curriculum materials, tests and quizzes as well as reports, writing and research examples. A typical weekly schedule would also be useful.

How much is tuition?
Tuition information can be found here.

How is financial aid awarded?
Our scholarship committee meets regularly and conducts a confidential review process of those families who have applied. All aid is based on need. WIS uses School and Social Services (SSS) of Princeton, NJ. Household income and expenses are used to determine eligibility. Families must apply for financial aid annually.

When will I know if I'm accepted?
If application materials are complete, the student will learn of their acceptance within a few days following the classroom visit.
