Mrs. Anne Powling

Middle School Language Arts

My Name is Mrs. Powling

I'm originally from Birmingham, England.

My birthday is April 13th.

My family includes my husband David and two daughters: Helen and Claire. We also have a dog named Finn and a cat named Holly.

I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/American Literature from University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Teaching Post-graduate qualification: King Alfred's College, Winchester, England. I have a diploma in Reading/Language Development from Open University in the UK.

My Teaching Philosophy:
'Education is the lighting of a fire, not the filling of a bucket.' I'm passionate about reading, writing, and self-expression and want to convey this enthusiasm to my students so they are empowered to be lifelong learners because they love what they do. I also want them to question the written word and articulate their own point of view. This comes from showing them 'how' to read and write not simply memorizing text.

A Few of my Favorite Things!

Food: Homemade soups, freshly made bread, European cheeses

Movies: On Golden Pond, Dead Poets Society, Life is Beautiful

Books: Walden by Thoreau, Beloved by Toni Morrison, and any Dickens novels

Music: Mozart (most), Joni Mitchell, Jason Mraz

Quote: "Well behaved women rarely make history."

Hobbies: Quilting, Reading, Photography, Running

Biggest Fear: Losing a member of my family.

Biggest ambition: Giving my grandchildren a love of books and life.
